If you run a service business in Singapore, most of your best customers start with a search like “aircon servicing near me” or “electrician Geylang”. The businesses that show up in the Google Maps results for those searches get the calls. Everyone else fights over what’s left.
That’s what local SEO is: making sure your business appears when people nearby search for what you sell. And unlike Google Ads, you don’t pay for every click.
In this guide I’ll show you the exact 7-step process I use for Singapore service businesses, including my own. No theory. Just the steps that move the needle.
Quick summary:
- Optimise your Google Business Profile (it’s the #1 local ranking asset)
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere
- Build one page per service on your website
- Get a steady flow of genuine Google reviews
- Make your site fast on mobile
- Add LocalBusiness schema
- Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and forms
What is local SEO (and why it matters in Singapore)?
Local SEO is the process of improving your visibility in location-based searches: the Google Maps “Local Pack” (the map with three businesses under it), Google Maps itself, and the organic results for searches with local intent.
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the location in the search) and prominence (how well-known and trusted your business is, including reviews and links).
You can’t change distance. But relevance and prominence are fully in your control, and that’s what the steps below improve.
Step 1: Fully optimise your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local SEO asset you own. Most Singapore SMEs set it up once and never touch it again. That’s your opportunity.
The settings that matter most
- Primary category: choose the most specific category for your main service (e.g. “Electrician”, not “Contractor”). This is one of the strongest relevance signals.
- Secondary categories: add the other services you genuinely offer.
- Services: list every service with a short description, using the words customers actually search for.
- Service areas: if you go to customers, add the Singapore regions you cover.
- Business hours: keep them accurate, including public holidays. Wrong hours create bad reviews.
- Description: 750 characters explaining what you do, who you serve and why you’re different. Write for humans first.
- Photos: upload real photos of your team, vehicles and completed work regularly. Skip the stock images.
Pro tip: add a UTM tag to your GBP website link (e.g. ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp) so you can see in GA4 exactly how many visitors and leads your profile sends.
Step 2: Make your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-checks your business details across the web. When your listings disagree (an old address here, a different phone number there), it reduces trust.
- Decide on one exact format for your business name, address and phone number.
- Update your website footer and contact page to match it.
- Update your listings on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook and the main Singapore business directories.
- Remove or correct duplicate and outdated listings.
Step 3: Build one page per service
One of the biggest mistakes I see is a single “Services” page listing everything. Google can’t rank one page for ten different services.
Instead, create a dedicated page for each core service, for example /electrical-repair/, /plumbing/ and /ceiling-partition/. Each page should include:
- A clear H1 with the service and location (e.g. “Electrical Repair Services in Singapore”)
- What’s included, typical problems you solve and your process
- Proof: photos of real jobs, reviews, licences and certifications
- FAQs customers actually ask
- A clear call-to-action: WhatsApp, call or form
Then link to each service page from your Google Business Profile services and your homepage.
Step 4: Get a steady flow of genuine Google reviews
Reviews influence both rankings (prominence) and whether people choose you once they see you. A business with 80 recent reviews will usually beat one with 6 reviews from 2021.
The simplest system I’ve found for Singapore service businesses:
- Get your review link from your Google Business Profile (“Ask for reviews”).
- Right after a job is completed and the customer is happy, send a short WhatsApp message with the link.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a few days.
Important: never buy reviews, write fake ones or offer discounts in exchange for reviews. It’s against Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or your profile suspended.
Step 5: Make your website fast on mobile
Most local searches happen on phones. If your page takes too long to load, visitors go back to Google and click a competitor.
Focus on Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), the time it takes for the main content to appear. Google considers an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less “good”. Quick wins:
- Compress images and serve them as WebP
- Don’t lazy-load the main (above-the-fold) image
- Remove plugins and page-builder bloat you don’t need
- Use caching and a lightweight theme
- Test with Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile, not desktop
Step 6: Add LocalBusiness schema
Schema markup is code that helps Google (and AI search tools) understand your business details precisely. Add it to your homepage or contact page. Here’s a simplified example:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Electrician",
"name": "Your Business Name",
"telephone": "+65 XXXX XXXX",
"url": "https://www.yourwebsite.sg/",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "Your street address",
"addressLocality": "Singapore",
"postalCode": "XXXXXX",
"addressCountry": "SG"
},
"areaServed": "Singapore"
}
</script>
Use the most specific type for your business (Electrician, Plumber, RoofingContractor, and so on), and make sure the details match your Google Business Profile exactly. Test it with Google’s Rich Results Test.
Step 7: Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and forms
If you can’t measure leads, you can’t improve them. Set up conversion tracking in GA4 (Google Tag Manager makes this easier) for:
- Clicks on phone numbers (
tel:links) - Clicks on WhatsApp buttons (
wa.melinks) - Contact form submissions
- Calls and website clicks from your Google Business Profile (see GBP Performance)
Review the numbers monthly. You’ll quickly see which pages and services bring real enquiries, and where to focus next.
Common local SEO mistakes to avoid
- Stuffing keywords into your business name on Google (it’s against the guidelines)
- Using a virtual office address to appear in more areas
- Leaving reviews unanswered
- Sending all traffic to the homepage instead of service pages
- Ignoring mobile speed
Your local SEO checklist
- ☐ Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours, description, photos
- ☐ UTM-tagged website link on your profile
- ☐ Identical NAP across website and directories
- ☐ One optimised page per core service
- ☐ Review request process via WhatsApp
- ☐ Mobile LCP under 2.5 seconds
- ☐ LocalBusiness schema added and tested
- ☐ GA4 tracking for calls, WhatsApp and forms

Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take to work in Singapore?
Google Business Profile improvements can show results within a few weeks, but meaningful ranking gains from local SEO usually take 3 to 6 months. The timeline depends on how competitive your service and area are, and how consistently you add reviews, content and photos.
Is local SEO free?
Creating and optimising a Google Business Profile is free. The real cost is time: building service pages, earning reviews, fixing website speed and tracking. Many SMEs do the basics themselves and hire help for technical work.
Do I need a physical shop to rank on Google Maps?
No. Service-area businesses such as contractors and consultants can hide their address and set the areas they serve. You still need a real business location; virtual offices are against Google’s guidelines.
How many Google reviews do I need?
There is no fixed number. Compare yourself with the top three businesses in the Google Maps results for your main service and aim to match or beat their review count and recency with genuine customer reviews.
What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?
Local SEO focuses on location-based searches and the Google Maps results, using your Google Business Profile, reviews and local relevance. Regular SEO targets broader organic searches through content, technical optimisation and links. Most service businesses need both.
